He got the name when, as a burned-out criminal defense investigator teaching English in Costa Rica, a student grappling with a tricky slang phrase lit up and blurted out, “You are like Elvis, the king of teachers!”

This eventually morphed into Elvis English.

Afterward, living in China, he started a blog in a land where arrests of bloggers do happen and used the name to put another layer between him and any possible future indictments.
